Works On Newsprint

Ever loved something that is inherently bad? About 12 years ago I started doing paintings on newsprint paper. I needed something both cheap and readily available to paint on, and paper seemed ideal. Newsprint is known as an archival nightmare; with all the acidity and fragility, it's born to suffer a miserable demise. But there is also magic in its delicate makeup. I found the surface liberating and new. Oil glides over the shellacked paper in a way that is unmatched; the velvety texture of newsprint stills remains and you can produce an effect that is as delicate as watercolor and as rich as stained wood. True love.
